The last breath of an Asian barred owlet!

Like any other weekend we decided to go for an outing to the nearest bird hotspot but in the early morning surprisingly we together change our mind to go to another birding hotspot what is away from earlier decided place but not too far, it’s about one hour drive and it’s a well-known Chittagong University campus. While two of us reached the University gate 2 young and energetic biologists join with us from University residents. Having breakfast, we start going towards forest area and seen many common, uncommon birds and some rare birds like Kalij pheasant, Black-naped Oriole, Ashy minivet, Ashy drongo and many more. We keep taking photographs and trying to take some good photographs. When we go into the botanical garden deep forest, we noticed a group of Common green magpie singing songs and flying one branch to another branch in the same tree and making fun, sometimes playing hide and seek in their natural world. We captured some photograph but light and timing was not good enough for excellent photograph due to shade light inside the dark and densely forest. While we move forward and passing a natural narrow waterway one young biologist with his sharp eyes noticed an owl into the lake water and bring this to our notice to take photograph and freeze the moment. Firstly, one of the senior photographer of Chittagong bird club took steps to photograph and captured video and come back to us , but this bird wasn’t fly away like any other day. Then I get into the lake water to freeze some moment and step by step we together move forward and captured some photograph and record video as well. While we manage to go close to the owl we finally able to realize this bird seems to be sick but we couldn’t believe this owl character since owl always pretending seems nothing happen around. We keep taking photographs and record video. When we go closer range, we noticed this bird is really sick, we were trying to understand this situation, but we have not stop recording video. Nevertheless, after a while we realized this bird losing its head to the lake water but before it’s finally dead this owl drink lake water nicely like any other normal bird and leave its head to the lake water and total environment become silent, we also shocked since a few moments back this bird looked normal. This is very tough to accept a bird death whether it’s natural death or not. We all got shocked seriously and stop photographing for the day and back home without having lunch. There was nothing that could have been done from us for this bird because we found and realized this bird sickness in the last stage. We might could do something for this Owl if we would find this earlier. This is the first time we experienced an Owl natural death but to be very honest it is a shocking and heartbreaking scenario for all of us.

May all birds happily live long and make the world so beautiful. Happy Birding!
